When someone is injured at work, farthest from his or her mind are claims and lawsuits. However, there are several provisions an injured worker should follow immediately after an accident on the job that will make collecting a workers’ compensation claim less complicated.
Immediately Following an On-the-Job Injury, a Worker Should:
1) Seek proper medical care.
2) Tell your doctor or healthcare provider that you were injured at work. Provide your caregiver as much detail as you can about how the accident occurred and what injuries you sustained.
3) Make a list of any and all coworkers who may have witnessed the accident.
4) Give your employer written notice of the accident within 30 days. This step is required by law. Make copies of your written report for yourself.
5) Allow your employer to choose your doctors and healthcare providers. Otherwise, your employer may not be required to pay for your medical treatment and/or rehabilitation.
6) Keep a written journal of significant information and activities regarding your accident, injury, treatment and claim.
