Digtriad.com reports that additional charges have been filed against a man who was driving a scooter during a deadly wreck in High Point, North Carolina on March 27, 2010.

Jerry Lee Phillips, 57, of High Point was previously charged with driving while impaired. The scooter accident ended the lives of Crystal M. Grimes and her infant who was delivered alive at High Point Regional Hospital. Tragically, the child died due to injuries sustained during the scooter crash.

Consequently, Mr. Phillips has now been charged with two counts of Felony Death by Motor Vehicle in addition to DWI.

If you own, operate or ride on scooters, bicycles or motorcycles, don’t forget that you don’t have to collide with another vehicle to sustain serious injury or death during an accident. Single-vehicle collisions on 2-wheeled vehicles happen frequently and can be just as dangerous as crashes with other objects. It’s important—imperative—to wear the appropriate safety gear and a helmet when you ride. And never, never drink alcohol or take drugs before driving or riding!
