The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a hit-and-run incident that occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Friday, December 10, 2010 in Burlington.

Two distinct collisions happened around the same time that evening and involved the same pickup truck.

First Sgt. Chuck Slemenda of the NC Highway Patrol said that two vehicles were wrecked during the first automobile accident. The pickup truck collided with these two vehicles at a stoplight on Huffman Mill Road.

Then, the truck made a u-turn and drove into a nearby apartment complex. The driver pulled the truck out of the apartment complex into oncoming traffic, and three more vehicles were damaged as a result.

Finally, the driver of the pickup pulled into an empty car dealership parking lot where the vehicle was abandoned. The driver fled on foot.

As of Tuesday, December 14, 2010, Officer Bruce Shoe of the Burlington Police Department has been suspended without pay because his personal vehicle is the offending pickup truck in this series of events. The Burlington Police handed over the investigation to the NC Highway Patrol, but no one has yet confirmed that Officer Shoe was the driver of the truck on the evening in question.

According to an article on digtriad.com, no charges have been filed as the investigation is pending.
