In North Carolina, drivers who have had their license less than 6 months and are under the age of 18 are considered Level 2 license holders. Though this might not have been the case for 17-year-old Chelsea Lamb, drivers at this level are not permitted to drive without supervision after 9 p.m. and they must insure that they and their passengers wear proper seat restraints. It’s also illegal for teens at this stage to use cell phones while driving.
Whatever the case may be in Chelsea’s accident, she is now in ICU at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC after losing control of the vehicle she was driving on March 21, 2011. The wreck happened around 10 p.m.
Chelsea was driving a red Jeep SUV when she lost control of the car at the intersection of Conrad Hill Mine Road and Robert Beck Road in Davidson County.
Both Chelsea and her passenger, April Brooke English, 16, were ejected from the vehicle. Neither of the girls was wearing seatbelts.
Chelsea is a junior at Ledford High School and April is in 10th grade at Central Davidson High. April is listed in stable condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Troopers who responded to the scene estimate that the car was travelling at about 75 mph shortly before the crash happened. The stretch of road Chelsea was driving is a 55 mph speed zone.
