Motorcycle rider killed in crash near Sophia, N.C.

Michael Carroll Lewis of Sophia was riding his motorcycle west on Mount Gilead Church Road near the Hillsville Community in Randolph County, North Carolina, when he was struck by a Ford Explorer. The fatal accident occurred near Lewis’s home on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Level Plains Road.

The Ford SUV was driven by Kasie Baker, 17, of Trinity. According to the report by the Highway Patrol, the Explorer pulled into the intersection and struck the motorcycle in the front wheel. The Ford was traveling 15 mph at the time of impact; the motorcycle, which had the right of  way, was going 45. The speed limit on both roads is 55 mph. Lewis was wearing a DOT-approved helmet.

Baker and her passenger were not seriously injured. She was charged with failure to yield and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Lewis, age 57, leaves behind a wife, three children, and seven grandchildren. Our heart goes out to the family in their time of mourning.
