Studies published in February have shown a link between Nexium, Prilosec and other proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) and chronic kidney disease. More recently, a study published in May 2016 links the same drugs to damage to blood vessels, possibly causing heart attacks in some cases.

In recent years the FDA has reiterated the dangers of high doses of acetaminophen – the active ingredient in Tylenol – and has limited prescription drugs to 325 milligrams per dose due to the increased risk of liver damage associated with the drug. The current “maximum daily amount” is 4,000 milligrams a day; exceeding that amount may lead to liver damage, the FDA warns.

However, over-the-counter drugs are not subject to the same restrictions as prescriptions drugs. In fact, Tylenol Extra Strength contains 500 milligrams per pill. At that rate, taking more than just 8 pills a day could significantly increase the risk of liver damage.

Finally, headlines about baby powder, and Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower brand in particular, point to the increased risk of ovarian cancer caused by regular, long-term use of talc-based products. In the 1970s, talc body powders were required to become asbestos free because of the known dangers of exposure to asbestos. Since then, studies have shown that the talc itself may also be a human carcinogen.
